Obstetrics

If you have just found out you are pregnant, firstly we would like to say congratulations. We hope to welcome you to the care of Dr Joseph Drentin. Our priority is that you experience an enjoyable and safe pregnancy. This is an exciting and special time for you and your partner. Dr Drentin aims to ensure that you and your baby remain safe and healthy throughout the course of your pregnancy. Dr Drentin will encourage you to have a significant input into the management of your pregnancy and requests you ask questions and seek guidance at any time.

Dr Drentin will aim to deliver your baby vaginally in a calm and safe environment. He encourages calm-birthing techniques and hypno-birthing, for those interested in these techniques. The routine forms of analgesia are available and provided upon patient request.

The first thing you need to do is contact the rooms to book your initial consultation with Dr Drentin. We will discuss any enquiries you may have and talk you through our fee structure so you know exactly where you stand.

For uncomplicated pregnancies your initial consultation will be booked between 8-10 weeks gestation. We will require your details over the phone while making your first booking, so please have your Medicare Card, Private Health Fund details and your referral letter at hand.

Where would you like to deliver?

We will need to send off a request for your maternity booking as soon as possible, as the hospitals fill quickly.

Dr Drentin delivers at:

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Fitzroy

Epworth Freemasons Maternity

After your hospital registration has been accepted for your maternity booking you will receive paperwork from your chosen hospital and you will need to fill out and return the registration forms as soon as possible.

After your first visit, for uncomplicated pregnancies you will generally be seen every 4 weeks up until you are 26-28 weeks gestation. You will then be seen every 2 weeks until 36 weeks gestation and then weekly after that. Each visit is aimed at assessing the well being of mother and baby. At times this may require the use of investigations such as blood tests and ultrasounds. Routine tests are conducted at set times during the pregnancy and Dr Drentin will advise you of these in advance where possible.
